Courtney Highlights Deadline Extension for Non-Filers to Register for Economic Impact Payment

October 9, 2020

ORWICH, CT – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) helped announce that for people who don't typically file a tax return, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended the deadline to register for an Economic Impact Payment to November 21st, 2020. The new deadline will give Americans who do not normally file a tax return, and who have not yet received an Economic Impact Payment authorized by the CARES Act, more time to ensure they receive a payment. "There are thousands of people in eastern Connecticut who don't typically file a tax return, and some of them still haven't received the direct payments that Congress authorized through the bipartisan CARES Act," said Congressman Courtney. "We've got to make sure that we're not leaving economic relief on the table, and this deadline extension by the IRS will help make sure that non-filers who haven't yet received their payment get a small boost in their bank accounts this fall. I encourage all non-filers who haven't yet received their impact payment to visit IRS.gov without delay to get registered, and my office remains open and on the job to help out anyone in eastern Connecticut who needs assistance."
In a press release issued Monday, October 5th, the IRS announced that the deadline to register for an Economic Impact Payment for people who do not typically file tax returns—and who have not yet received an impact payment—has been extended to November 21st, 2020. The IRS encouraged non-filers to register for their payments as quickly as possible using the Non-Filers Tool on IRS.gov.
The IRS also noted that anyone using the Non-Filers Tool can speed the arrival of their payment by choosing to receive it by direct deposit. For more details, click here.
