Courtney Helps Announce Over $332 Million for CT Department of Transportation through the American Rescue Plan
New funding will help offset local budget shortfalls and support service at eastern Connecticut’s transit agencies
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) joined the Connecticut Congressional Delegation in helping announce $332.5 million awarded to the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) through the American Rescue Plan Act (H.R. 1319). The funding is part of the Rescue Plan's authorization to provide relief for public transportation systems nationwide, and to help offset local budget shortfalls so that transit agencies can retain employees and maintain service as communities continue to recover from COVID-19.
"The American Rescue Plan correctly identified the stalwart service that transit agencies SEAT and others have delivered through the worst of a global pandemic," said Rep. Courtney. "The drivers and bus maintenance crews, and all the other workers who make the buses run on time and who were part of that front line that helped us all keep getting to work, to the grocery store, and to medical appointments—that's who this funding is going to support, and with resources that will really make an impact."
Courtney continued: "With the subsequent passage of the new bipartisan infrastructure law, the IIJA, which includes the highest level of funding for surface transportation and mass transit in our state's history, today's announcement positions eastern Connecticut's transit agencies to really take advantage of that investment so that we can be ready to keep moving forward."
CT DOT will receive $332.5 million through the American Rescue Plan Act to help local transit agencies maintain service and keep workers on payroll as communities continue to recover from the pandemic. This funding is part of more than $30 billion for public transportation in the ARP, which was signed into law by President Biden on March 11, 2021. The grant funds for CTDOT will help maintain and improve transit service for Connecticut residents and visitors as the agency continues to address pandemic-related challenges such as decreased ridership and staff shortages.
