Courtney Condemns Alleged Harassment Aboard Submarine

December 4, 2014

WASHINGTON—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) issued the following statement after reports of alleged criminal activity aboard the USS Wyoming, an Ohio Class submarine homeported at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. The Navy is currently investigating allegations that a male sailor videotaped women officers in a shower area of the ship.

“I am very distributed by these reports. The women and men of the submarine force deserve better from their fellow sailors. I am confident the Navy will fully investigate these allegations and hold anyone involved fully accountable.

“This is an ongoing investigation, but I intend to monitor this issue closely in my role on the House Armed Services Committee to ensure that female sailors are successfully integrated on our submarine fleet, while also ensuring their freedom from any kind of harassment or violations of their privacy. Women are crucial members of our armed forces, and no one who wears our nation’s uniform should have to face this kind of criminal conduct from a fellow servicemember.”
