Courtney, Barr Wager Local Specialties on UConn-Kentucky NCAA Final

April 7, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today Reps. Joe Courtney (CT-2) and Andy Barr (KY-6) announced the details of a friendly wager over the upcoming NCAA Championship game between the men’s basketball teams from the University of Connecticut and the University of Kentucky.

If Connecticut wins, Rep. Barr will provide Courtney with an assortment of Kentucky’s Sixth District signature bourbons, candies, and treats. Courtney, a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Law, will have to hand over a gift basket of eastern Connecticut signature treats including Munson’s Chocolates, Selbuort Valley Farms Maple Syrup, Cato Corner Cheese, Deep River Chips, Jarmoc cigars and Cottrell Beer, should Kentucky win.

“Coach Ollie has been masterful in this post-season, and the Huskies looked cool and confident on Saturday in their win against top-seeded Florida,” Congressman Courtney said. “Kentucky is always tough, but Shabazz Napier and his team look tougher. I’m looking forward to a repeat of 2004 this year, with UConn’s men and women earning national titles.”

“After what has been arguably one of the most difficult paths to the Championship game ever, Big Blue Nation is ready for the Cats to avenge our loss to the Huskies in the 2011 Final Four,” said Congressman Andy Barr. "Tonight's matchup will be another hard fought battle, but these Cats have proven their ability to win in the clutch. Congratulations to Coach Cal and this team on an unbelievable season and for reminding the world that Kentucky is home to the greatest tradition in the history of college basketball.”

The UConn Huskies are in contention for their fourth national title since 1999 – the most of any school in that period. Courtney placed a similar friendly wager with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) on the outcome of the men’s semifinal game versus the University of Florida. Click here to read that release.
