Courtney applauds ribbon cutting at SUBASE New London indoor small arms range
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded the completion and official opening of the new indoor small arms range at SUBASE New London. In 2008, Congressman Courtney secured $11 million to build the range as part of the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2009. Prior to Congressman Courtney securing the funding, the Navy did not plan to fund the project until 2013.
"Today's ribbon cutting at the Sub Base's new indoor small arms range marks the completion of yet another project that modernizes the infrastructure and increases the strategic value of SUBASE New London," said Congressman Courtney. "Since 2007 I have fought to secure more than $80 million in new military construction projects at the base that will improve operations, bolster training and ensure that the base can achieve its mission. That funding, along with the base's synergy with Electric Boat and strong support from the State of Connecticut have put SUBASE New London in a stronger, more secure position going forward.
"Under Capt. Marc Denno's leadership, the Navy has also committed to share the new facility with State and local police and the Coast Guard, ensuring that the range is truly a community asset."
The new indoor range supplements the other range at SUBASE New London – an outdoor range that is nearly 60 years old and closed frequently due to inclement weather. The new indoor firing range will provide SUBASE New London with a new 20 lane indoor small arms range facility capable of supporting the full modern small arms training needs of personnel stationed in Groton.
