Courtney applauds $14.5 million Pentagon contract for CT company to construct new commissary at SUBASE New London
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today applauded a new $14.5 million contracted awarded by the Department of Defense to Farmington-based KBE Building Corporation for the construction of a new commissary at SUBASE New London. The competitively-awarded contract is the latest in a string of upgrades at SUBASE New London, and comes on the heels of the April ribbon cutting for the new Pier 31.
"This latest investment at SUBASE New London will further improve the base's infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for the men and women stationed there," said Congressman Courtney. "The fact that a Connecticut company and Connecticut workers won this competitive bidding process is good news for our workforce, and will provide an additional boost to our economy."
Since 2007 – his first year in office – Congressman Courtney has secured more than $85 million in new federally-funded military construction projects at the base. This total includes: $9.3 million for a Submarine Learning Center, $11.9 million for a Waterfront Operations Center, $11 million for a new indoor firing range, $36 million to replace Pier 31 on the waterfront, and $6.6 million for a new MK-48 Torpedo Magazine. Together with other federal and State funded initiatives at the base, nearly $150 million has been spent at the base since 2005 to improve its infrastructure and ability to support its mission.
Congressman Courtney is the sole member of the Connecticut Congressional delegation to sit on the House Armed Services Committee. He is a member of the Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over the U.S. Navy, and he is the co-chairman of the bipartisan House Shipbuilding Caucus.
