Courtney Applauds $13.6 Million Navy Contract Award to UConn for Undersea Technology Research 

NORWICH, CT – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) released the following statement on a new $13,617,790 U.S. Navy contract award to the University of Connecticut for applied research to advance undersea vehicle technologies. This awardis funded by Fiscal Year 2025 defense funding provided in the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2025 (PL 119-4). During the FY2025 appropriations process, Courtney led a letter urging continued support for UConn and the University of Rhode Island’s National Institute for Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT). The contract will fund 20 research projects through NIUVT.  

“This award builds on the strong partnership UConn and URI have developed with the Navy through NIUVT and marks a deeper level of collaboration on undersearesearch,” Courtney said. “For more than eight years, UConn and URI have delivered research that benefits the Navy and shipbuilders across Southern New England. Today, NIUVT is helping Electric Boat explore and transition advanced technologies for the Virginia and Columbia class submarine programs, unmanned water vehicles, and other undersea technology. This new investment will deepen that collaboration and help ensure that the critical research happening in our region continues to support the Navy’s undersea fleet." 

Work will be performed in Storrs, Connecticut and Kingston, Rhode Island and is expected to be completed in August  2031.
