Courtney Announces the Winner of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition for the Second Congressional District

NORWICH, C.T. —Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) announced that the winner of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition was revealed last night during a reception and art show at the Garde Arts Center in New London. The winner this year Alexandra Crampton of RHAM High School in Hebron.

“We had so many great works of art entered into the competition this year, it was clearly a very difficult decision for our judges to choose one single winner,” said Courtney. “I am very impressed by the level of artistic ability and creativity shown by the young people who took part this year. It seems like year after year – the art works get even better. After the judges made a careful evaluation of the entries, I am pleased to announce that Alexandra Crampton of RHAM High School in Hebron is the winner for the Second Congressional District. Her entry was the standout piece of the night, and we are proud that it will represent eastern Connecticut in the Capitol building for the next year.”

The Congressional Arts Competition allows high school students from across the Second Congressional District to submit their works of art to be judged by a panel of college art department faulty members. The winner and a guest will be flown by Southwest Airlines to Washington, D.C. for a reception later this summer, and the winning artwork will be displayed with other works of art from across the country in the U.S. Capitol building until next spring.

The competition has been sponsored nationwide by the U.S. House of Representative since 1982. In that time, more than 650,000 high school students nationwide have participated in the annual Congressional Art Competition. More than 50 artworks were entered into the Second Congressional District competition this year.
