Courtney Announces Guest for State of the Union Address

January 6, 2016

WASHINGTON—Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2), announced that he has invited Dr. Mohammed Qureshi of Marlborough, a primary care physician who works in Norwich to be his guest for President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address to Congress.

“I am very happy that Dr. Mohammed Qureshi has agreed to be my guest at President Obama’s final State of the Union address,” said Courtney. “Dr. Qureshi is an important member of our local medical community, serving as a primary care physician at United Community & Family Services and Backus Hospital in Norwich. His lifetime of work and service should be an example to all.”

“I am honored to join Congressman Courtney in Washington for the President’s State of the Union address,” said Qureshi. “Having worked as a primary care physician at United Community & Family Services and Backus Hospital for many years, I have treated thousands of patients from across eastern Connecticut and seen this region change and grow over time. Indeed, I am proud to be part of the team at UCFS that gained federal designation to expand primary health care for the region in 2015, allowing us to serve thousands of additional families.”

Dr. Mohammed Qureshi is a primary care physician at both United Community & Family Services and Backus Hospital in Norwich. He is originally from the United Kingdom, but has made eastern Connecticut his home since 2004. Dr. Qureshi is the President of the Connecticut chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Following the terrorist attacks last November in Paris, the mosque that Dr. Qureshi’s family attends in Meriden was fired at in a random act of violence, although no one was hurt during the incident. In the wake of that event, Dr. Qureshi has become a prominent voice advocating for education and understanding in response to anti-Islamic sentiment.
