Courtney Announces Federal Funding Award for New London Fire Department

September 6, 2019

VERNON, CT – Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Management Agency has awarded a federal grant of more than $415,000 to the New London Fire Department. The new federal funding will support vehicle rescue training for New London firefighters, as well as new equipment including power stretchers and ambulance lift systems for New London's fire stations.

"It's always great to see federal resources coming back home to us in eastern Connecticut," said Congressman Courtney. "These funds will help support critical, life-saving training for our firefighters in New London, as well as much-needed new equipment for our fire stations. These funding opportunities are highly competitive – the awards aren't just handed out. I'm proud of the New London Fire Department for putting in the work to earn these federal grant dollars."

"Our city deeply appreciates the federal government's support for the great work of the New London Fire Department," said New London Mayor Mike Passero. "This grant provides much-needed resources to help support the department's life-saving mission. I am grateful for Congressman Courtney's unwavering advocacy for New London. Support like this from the federal government allows us to continue to provide a superior quality of life for our residents."

"For a city like ours, who is always searching for funding opportunities while trying to avoid raising the tax base, this grant award is invaluable," said Thomas Curcio, New London Fire Chief. "These federal dollars coming into New London will help support the procurement of much-needed new equipment for our stations, and training for our fire fighters. Without a federal grant like this, these are projects that we would simply otherwise be unable to go after and complete. I'm proud of the work our team put in to successfully apply for and obtain this competitive federal grant award, and thankful to Congressman Joe Courtney's office for helping our application along with a letter of support."

The New London Fire Department will receive a federal grant award of $415,954.54. The investment will be used to provide rescue training to New London firefighters, and to procure new power stretchers and ambulance lift systems for the New London Fire Department. Click here to read more.
