Courtney announces $610,000 HUD grant for Mansfield to plan for long-term sustainability, create jobs, increase affordable housing units

November 21, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC– Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the Town of Mansfield secured a $610,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to proactively plan for growth resulting from the new technology park at the University of Connecticut and ensure long-term sustainability of the Town. The grant will be used to create a Sustainable Development and Green Building Action Plan, prepare a Housing and Economic Development Strategy, and ensure that zoning regulations support housing choice and business growth by identifying and removing regulatory barriers in the development process.

Congressman Courtney strongly supported the Town of Mansfield's grant application and wrote to HUD urging the agency to approve the funding that was secured today.

"This funding will make a huge difference in Mansfield's ongoing effort to become a more livable and sustainable community,"said Congressman Courtney. "With the University of Connecticut at its heart, the Town is doing the right thing today: working to ensure an adequate water-supply system and reevaluating zoning regulations that affect housing and business growth."

Through this long-term sustainability planning process, the Town hopes to: expand community participation, increase the number of housing units affordable to the general workforce, facilitate job creation, and preserve agricultural land while allowing farmers to recognize value from land holdings.

"The Town is thrilled to receive this grant," said Town Manager Matthew Hart. "This funding will help up to accomplish several of our goals and objectives outlined in our strategic plan including those relating to sustainability, transportation, economic development, and housing. We appreciate the support from Congressman Courtney and other state, local and federal officials in receiving this grant. This initiative will prove a tremendous asset to the Town for the next several years to come."
