Courtney announces $46,548 federal grant for Town of Putnam to administer substance abuse prevention program

August 24, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Joe Courtney today announced that the Town of Putnam secured a $46,548 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services's (HHS) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention to help the Town combat underage drinking. The competitively-secured funding will be used to pay for the Putnam Police Department's shoulder-tap program and increased liquor establishment compliance checks to ensure that businesses are not selling alcohol to minors. The grant also funds Public Service Announcements on local radio and in print outlets, as well as other outreach efforts.

"This funding will help the Town of Putnam educate young people about the dangers of underage drinking and ensure that businesses comply with laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol to minors," said Congressman Courtney. "The Town of Putnam deserves tremendous credit for securing this funding in an extremely competitive environment. It will provide a significant boost to local law enforcement, and keep the community safe."

"This grant will allow the Town to continue its efforts to provide the necessary programs to combat underage drinking," said Douglas Cutler, Putnam PRIDE Coalition Program Director. "Thanks go to Congressman Courtney for his continued efforts to support the legislative funding to allow these programs to move forward to the benefit of Putnam's youth."
