Groton-based Electric Boat was awarded a $152.4 million contract modification Wednesday by the U.S. Navy to provide lead-yard services for Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines, Congressman Joe Courtney announced Wednesday in a news release. Under the contract, Electric Boat will maintain and update design drawings and data, including technology insertions, for each Virginia-class submarine throughout its construction and post-shakedown availability periods.

With the exercise of this option, the cumulative value of the contract at its completion in 2014 will be $921.4 million, according to General Dynamics' website. "This investment shows that even in times of fiscal uncertainty, the work that Electric Boat employees are doing each day remains absolutely crucial to the strength of our submarine fleet and our national security," Courtney said. "This contract will enable EB's engineering and design team--comprised of more than 4,000 highly skilled individuals--to maintain and update design drawings and data for each Virginia class submarine."
