I am claiming a return of a deceased taxpayer and have not heard back. Can you help?
The IRS can take a long time to process a return. My office can check on the processing of your return claim.
Who can I talk to about problems like liens, back taxes, penalties, etc.?
You can contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) to discuss issues you are experiencing with the IRS. TAS is an independent organization within the IRS which ensures that every taxpayer is treated fairly. TAS also has the National Taxpayer Advocate Blog, a platform that educates taxpayers on tax-related matters.
My office can also communicate with the Advocate’s office on your behalf, and doing so will guarantee that your case stays local.
Where can I get IRS forms?
You can look up forms and corresponding instructions at this webpage.
Can I get free tax return preparation?
Possibly. The IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer basic tax return preparation services for qualifying individuals.
VITA is generally open to people who make under $64,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and or limited English-speaking taxpayers.
TCE offers tax help for those age 60 or older, and volunteers specialize in questions about pensions and retirement related issues.
Before you go to a VITA or TCE site, check this IRS publication for details as to what site volunteers can assist you with and what you should bring to your appointment.
