New Federal Funding to Enhance Health Care Infrastructure Bound for Eastern Connecticut, Courtney Announces

September 29, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) announced that two eastern Connecticut health centers are set to receive funding through the American Rescue Plan to support construction, renovation, and other capital improvements to enhance local health care infrastructure. The two federal grant awards total more than $1.4 million and will be awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to two eastern Connecticut health centers that serve patients throughout New London and Windham Counties: United Community and Family Health Services in Norwich, and Generations Family Health Center, Inc. in Willimantic.

"The American Rescue Plan has helped thousands of eastern Connecticut families, it's helped local businesses reopen their doors, and it kicked our vaccination effort into high-gear," said Congressman Courtney. "Our state is leading the pack in America's recovery, and now this latest American Rescue Plan funding is going to help our local health care centers—the same ones who have helped our communities stay strong and bounce back—to build back even stronger. Generations Family Health and United Services stepped up big time during COVID, performing an extraordinary amount of work under increasingly difficult circumstances. This federal funding is going to help them expand and improve baseline services going forward, which is a win for our communities, and it's going to help make sure we're even better prepared to respond to public health emergencies in the future. Great to see the American Rescue Plan continuing to strengthen our recovery."

A federal grant of $727,752 will be awarded to Generations Family Health Center, and a federal grant of $719,767 will be awarded to United Community and Family Services. The funding was awarded through the HHS Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Health Center Construction and Capital Improvements program—a program authorized specifically by the American Rescue Plan Act, which Rep. Courtney voted to pass in March. The program provides one-time funding to health care centers to support construction, expansion, alteration, renovation, and other capital improvements to modify, enhance, and expand health care infrastructure.
