Courtney Joins House in Voting to Pass Resolution Calling on Vice President Pence to Activate Section 4 of the 25th Amendment
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) voted to pass H.Res. 21, a resolution calling on Vice President Pence to convene and mobilize the principle officers of the Cabinet to activate Section 4 of the 25th Amendment. The vote comes following last week’s violent siege of the U.S. Capitol, whose perpetrators were seeking to disrupt Congress’s vote to certify a lawful presidential election in accordance with the Constitution. Leaders and elected officials, including from the President’s own Cabinet, have placed blame on President Trump not only for inciting the rioters to violence, but also for failing to adequately quell the destruction being carried out in his name as it was taking place.
“As we learn more about the disturbing plots to overthrow our nation’s democracy that were afoot inside of the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday, there’s no question that a Commander in Chief who spurred on that sort of activity is unfit to serve any longer,” said Congressman Courtney. “It would be best for the country for the President to resign. Because he will not, however, and because his actions deserve to be met with consequences, Congress has been left with no choice but to move forward with efforts to secure our nation and our democracy in the remaining days of his term. I believe it was my duty to join my colleagues to rebuke this President for the violence and chaos he helped unleash upon our own nation’s Capitol. No American should doubt that our nation and democracy are secure, and that has been made impossible under this President.
“Vice President Pence should heed the growing bipartisan call to activate Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, and should not waste time in doing so. If he will not, then the House will move forward with impeachment—the President’s actions deserve to be met with serious consequence, and we have a responsibility to send a clear warning to all those who would seek to follow his path in the future.”
H.Res. 21 would call on the Vice President to exercise Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, which would declare President Trump incapable of executing the duties of his office and would transmit notice to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House that Vice President Pence would immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President. If the Vice President fails to act, the House is expected to consider voting on Articles of Impeachment later this week.
