Congressman Joe Courtney

Representing the 2nd District of Connecticut

Supporting Ernie Maynard And His Mission To Aid Fellow Vets

April 12, 2018
Constituent Corner

Ernest Maynard, a local veteran from Enfield, served our country during World War II and the Korea War, and has worked with Congressman Courtney's veterans' representative to secure his VA benefit

Ernest Maynard is a local veteran from Enfield who served our country during World War II and the Korea War. By the time Ernie turned 30, he had already served in two major wars including historic campaigns such as the Battle of the Bulge. After his military service came to an end, Ernie returned home and spent 30 years serving as a volunteer firefighter in his community. His entire life has been dedicated to service and now at age 94, he is still a passionate advocate, volunteer, and friend to vets across our region.

Ernie first contacted my office in the summer of 2015 to request assistance with obtaining Korean Ambassador for Peace Medals for local Korean War veterans. I was happy to work with him on this effort, and since that time, we have presented nearly 200 of these medals to veterans across the Second Congressional District.

While Ernie was focused on helping his fellow veterans, my office was able to provide him with some important help as well. Ernie was eligible for disability compensation benefits he had earned when he was injured on active duty but never received them. He brought it up with my staff and we were able to get him hearing aids with an approval for 60% hearing loss as well as his entitled VA disability benefits. His case shows that it’s never too late to get the support, care, and services that these veterans have earned.

Last year, my office returned over $622,000 dollars to veterans just like Ernie through our constituent casework program. There may be other veterans across our region who need similar assistance with obtaining the benefits they have earned. If you or anyone you know is a veteran who requires assistance, please call my Norwich office at 860-886-0139.
